Understanding AMP Ratings

The AMP rating helps identify the intended capacity and application of each VoltFlow jumper lead model. The range is cumulative, meaning higher-rated models can also be used for the smaller vehicles covered by the models below them.

  • 400AMP: small cars, sedans and compact petrol vehicles
  • 600AMP: SUVs, light commercial vehicles and larger petrol engines
  • 1000AMP: virtually all common petrol-engine applications, 4WDs and diesel V8s
  • 1550AMP: all smaller applications, plus large 4WDs, diesel V8s and light- to medium-duty trucks
  • 1800AMP: the entire VoltFlow application range, including heavy trucks, prime movers, tractors, farm machinery and demanding commercial equipment

A higher-rated lead set does not force its maximum rated current into a smaller vehicle. The vehicle’s starting system draws the current it requires. System voltage must still match, and the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions must always be followed.

Choosing Cable Length

Cable length determines how closely the assisting vehicle must be positioned to the vehicle with the flat battery.

  • 3.6m cables: suitable for many passenger-car and SUV connection positions.
  • 6.0m to 6.5m cables: provide additional reach around 4WDs, trucks, tractors, wide engine bays and vehicles that cannot be positioned nose-to-nose.

Cable construction, vehicle suitability and correct connection procedures remain important regardless of cable length.

Surge and Reverse-Polarity Protection

Surge protection is designed to help reduce the effect of voltage spikes that can occur during jump-starting.

Reverse-polarity protection or indication helps identify an incorrect positive and negative connection. The exact protection and monitoring features vary by model.

These features support correct use but do not replace checking terminal polarity, following the vehicle manuals or using the correct connection sequence.

12V and 24V Systems

Only use jumper leads that are stated as suitable for the vehicle’s electrical system and application.

The assisting vehicle and the disabled vehicle must use the same system voltage. Never directly connect a 12V vehicle to a 24V vehicle.

Check both vehicle owner’s manuals for designated jump-start terminals, system-voltage information and model-specific instructions.

Jumper Leads vs Portable Jump Starters

Jumper leads transfer starting power from a compatible donor vehicle. They do not contain an internal battery, but they require another suitable vehicle to be available.

Portable jump starters contain their own rechargeable battery and can be used without a donor vehicle, provided the unit is charged and suitable for the vehicle.

Neither option is universally better. The appropriate choice depends on vehicle type, storage requirements, maintenance preferences and the likely roadside situation.

Are the 400AMP, 600AMP and 1000AMP models different lengths?

Yes. The 400AMP and 600AMP models use 3.6m cables. The 1000AMP model uses a longer 6.0m cable.

Which model suits a diesel 4WD?

The 1000AMP model is the general VoltFlow option for many 4WD and diesel V8 applications.

The 1550AMP model is also suitable and may be preferred for particularly large 4WDs, heavier starting requirements or when additional cable length is useful. The 1800AMP model can also be used on these vehicles.

Which model suits trucks, tractors and farm machinery?

The 1550AMP model is intended for large 4WDs, light- to medium-duty trucks, commercial vehicles and workshop applications.

The 1800AMP nitrile model is the ultimate heavy-duty option for heavy trucks, prime movers, tractors, farm machinery and demanding agricultural, commercial or industrial applications.

The 1800AMP model can also be used on all smaller applications covered by the rest of the VoltFlow range.

Can VoltFlow jumper leads be used with 24V systems?

Only use a VoltFlow model that is specifically stated as suitable for the relevant vehicle and system.

Both vehicles must use the same system voltage, and the vehicle manufacturer must permit jump-starting. Never directly connect a 12V vehicle to a 24V vehicle.

What is nitrile cable?

Nitrile refers to the outer cable insulation material. It is used on the 1800AMP model to provide flexibility and durability for heavy-duty handling, agricultural environments and commercial applications.

The 1800AMP VoltFlow model uses a 6.5m, 14mm nitrile cable with 560 strands and 50% copper.

What does reverse-polarity protection do?

Reverse-polarity protection or indication is designed to identify or respond to an incorrect positive and negative connection.

The leads must still be connected carefully and in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions. Never rely on the protection feature instead of checking terminal polarity.

Do jumper leads need maintenance?

Jumper leads should be inspected periodically and before use. Check the cable insulation, clamps, connection points and protection unit for wear, corrosion or damage.

Keep the leads clean, dry and stored in their supplied bag or carry case. Do not use them if the cable, clamps or protection components are visibly damaged.
